Do I need to change anything on my underlying policies before adding umbrella?

Sometimes. Umbrella carriers require minimum underlying limits — typically $1M per occurrence on GL, $1M combined single limit on commercial auto, and $500K–$1M on employer's liability. If your underlying limits don't meet the umbrella's minimums, you'll need to raise them first. The umbrella application also asks underwriting questions about your underlying program, and a misalignment between the two can create coverage gaps where the umbrella doesn't drop down. We coordinate the underlying program and the umbrella as a single placement.
