What does general liability insurance actually cover?

GL covers bodily injury, property damage, and personal/advertising injury that you cause to a third party in the course of your business. Typical examples: a patient slips on a wet floor in your waiting room and breaks a wrist; a contractor accidentally damages a client's property; you're sued for libel, slander, or copyright infringement over a marketing piece. Most policies also include products and completed-operations coverage (harm caused by something you sold or installed) and contractual liability coverage (the indemnity obligations you take on when you sign a contract). What it does not cover: employee injuries (that's workers' comp), professional mistakes (that's E&O or malpractice), damage to your own property (that's commercial property), or auto accidents (that's commercial auto).
