What's the difference between an insurance broker, an agent, and buying direct?

Three meaningfully different relationships:

  • A broker represents you (the client) and shops multiple carriers to find the right combination of coverage, price, and carrier strength. Brokers have legal duties to the client and access multiple insurance markets — they're appointed with many carriers and pick the best fit for each placement.
  • An agent represents the carrier. Captive agents work exclusively for one carrier (State Farm, Allstate, etc.); independent agents represent several. Agents tend to be focused on placing the products their carriers offer.
  • Direct-to-carrier means buying from the carrier without intermediation (some online platforms, certain personal lines).

For commercial and complex personal coverage, brokers add value by knowing which carriers are competitive for which risk profiles, advocating in claims, and providing year-round service. Morningside is a brokerage — we represent our clients, not the carriers.
