Why would my business need umbrella when I already have $1M GL?

Three common drivers: (1) contracts requiring proof of $5M+ combined limits (typical in commercial leases, hospital vendor contracts, large client master service agreements); (2) operations or premises with severe-injury potential — clinical settings, heavy foot traffic, hazardous equipment, business vehicles on the road; (3) personal asset protection if you operate as a sole proprietor or partnership where the owners' personal assets are at risk in a primary-limit-busting verdict. Umbrella is unusually cheap per dollar of limit — typically $40 per month per $1M of coverage — which is why it's standard practice for any business with non-trivial third-party exposure.
