What are common malpractice policy limits, and how do I pick one?

The market standard for physicians is $1M per claim / $3M aggregate, often referred to as "$1M/$3M." Some specialties (OB/GYN, neurosurgery, orthopedics) commonly carry higher; some employed physicians carry lower because the hospital group policy stacks above. Allied health (NP, PA, RN, therapists) typically carry $1M/$3M or $1M/$6M depending on autonomy and specialty. Limits should reflect (a) state caps on damages where applicable, (b) hospital credentialing minimums, (c) the financial severity of the claims plausible in your specialty, and (d) personal asset protection beyond the limits. We size against your specific risk profile, not a generic recommendation.
