What does long-term care insurance cover?

LTC insurance covers care that's not medical treatment but ongoing assistance with daily living — nursing home, assisted living, adult day care, and home health aide services. Coverage triggers when you need help with two or more activities of daily living (ADLs) — bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring, continence — or when you have severe cognitive impairment. Benefits are typically paid as a daily or monthly maximum (e.g., $200/day or $6,000/month) for a benefit period (3 years, 5 years, lifetime). Most policies include inflation protection because care costs rise faster than CPI.
