What is a Certificate of Insurance (COI)?

A COI is a one-page summary document that confirms an active insurance policy and lists key terms — carrier, named insured, policy number, effective dates, coverage types, limits, deductibles, and any additional insureds or certificate holders. It's the standard proof-of-insurance document used in commercial contracts: landlords require COIs before lease signing; clients require them before vendor onboarding; hospitals require them as part of physician credentialing. COIs are routinely issued at no charge, often within 24 hours of request, and are typically delivered digitally.
