A paid malpractice claim is reported to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) and shows on credentialing applications and carrier underwriting questions for years. It can affect renewal premiums (sometimes meaningfully, sometimes not), carrier appetite for your account, and hospital credentialing decisions. Severity matters more than fact-of-claim — a low-severity nuisance settlement is treated very differently from a multimillion-dollar verdict. Some carriers offer "first claim forgiveness" or absorb a single defense-only claim without a rate change.
