How does orthodontia work in dental plans?

Most plans cover orthodontia as a separate benefit with its own lifetime maximum (typically $1,000–$2,500) and often only for dependent children under age 19. Adult orthodontia is sometimes excluded entirely. Waiting periods of 12–24 months are common — meaning orthodontia coverage isn't useful for employees joining the plan with a child already in braces. Carrier orthodontia benefits look broadly similar; the lifetime max is the main differentiator.
