What is hospital indemnity insurance?

Hospital indemnity pays a fixed cash benefit per day of hospital admission, regardless of cause. Typical benefits: $100–$300/day of hospitalization, with separate (smaller) benefits for outpatient surgery, ER visits, and ambulance use. It's especially valuable for employees on high-deductible plans where a 5-day hospital stay can drain the deductible plus add significant lost wages. Premiums are modest — typically $15–$40/month for individual coverage.
