What's the difference between accident insurance and critical illness insurance?

Accident insurance pays scheduled cash benefits when the employee has an accidental injury (broken bone, ER visit, hospital stay following an accident). Critical illness insurance pays a lump-sum benefit when the employee is diagnosed with a covered critical illness — typically heart attack, stroke, cancer, kidney failure, organ transplant, ALS, multiple sclerosis. Critical illness pays once per condition (some policies have additional re-occurrence benefits). Both are common pairings with high-deductible health plans, where the cash benefit can offset the deductible and lost wages during recovery.
