What is the difference between an occurrence policy and a claims-made policy?

An occurrence policy covers any incident that happens during the policy period, regardless of when the claim is filed. A claims-made policy covers claims that are both made and reported while the policy is active. Claims-made policies are common in professional liability and typically require a tail (extended reporting period) when you change carriers or retire. We help you understand which structure you have, when a tail is necessary, and how to manage the transition if you switch carriers.
