Most small to mid-sized NY employers carry $1M as a starting point, scaling to $2M–$5M for higher-risk industries (healthcare, financial services, hospitality) or higher headcount. Class-action exposures (wage and hour, systemic discrimination) and large-employer wrongful-termination verdicts can exceed $1M; meaningful claims in NYC frequently settle in the $250K–$1M range with defense costs alone running $50K–$200K. Underwriters cap small-account limits at $1M typically; getting to $2M–$5M may require larger payroll or stronger HR posture.
