Is general liability insurance required by law?

General liability (GL) is not mandated by state statute. In practice, though, you'll find it required by almost every commercial landlord, client master service agreement, professional licensing board, and lender you encounter. Most New York commercial leases require tenants to carry at least $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate of GL with the landlord named as an additional insured. Many healthcare facility credentialing applications and vendor agreements require proof of GL before they'll open the door. So while no law forces you to buy it, your contracts and counterparties effectively will.
