What does workers' compensation cover?

WC covers medical expenses, partial wage replacement, and rehabilitation costs for employees injured on the job or who develop work-related illnesses. It also pays death benefits to dependents in the event of a fatality. The trade-off built into the system: employees give up the right to sue the employer for ordinary workplace negligence in exchange for guaranteed coverage regardless of fault. Most policies bundle in employer's liability coverage, which protects the employer from the narrower set of suits that survive WC's exclusive-remedy rule (third-party-over actions, dual-capacity claims, intentional torts).
