What's a workers' comp class code and why does it affect my premium?

Every employee is assigned a class code based on the type of work they actually perform — not their job title. Class codes drive premium because the rate per $100 of payroll varies enormously by risk class: a clerical employee at $0.20 per $100 of payroll, a roofer at $20+ per $100. NY uses NCCI-adapted class codes administered by the NY Compensation Insurance Rating Board (NYCIRB). Misclassification — accidentally or "creatively" — triggers premium audits that recapture back premium plus penalties. We classify carefully at quote and review at audit so there are no surprises at year-end.
